Here is part 2 of my post/rant about natural remedies :)    If you haven’t read Part 1, here is the the abbreviated version:

Legalization of prescription drug advertising in the 90s has led to rampant overuse of prescription drugs. This increase in information and resources about prescription drugs has overshadowed the effective and safe natural remedies, which seldom have large budgets for consumer advertising.  As a result, people like you and me aren’t informed about natural alternatives to drugs, which are often plant based supplements which have been used effectively for centuries.

Basic gist of all of this is:

BEING TOTALLY DEPENDENT ON HEALTH INFORMATION FROM BIG CORPORATIONS  = LAZY AND IRRESPONSIBLE

TAKE CONTROL OF YOUR OWN HEALTH. RESEARCH, READ, ASK QUESTIONS ABOUT NATURAL REMEDIES.

Now, on to the good stuff. Here are the top 5 of my 10 fave natural remedies.  I use these daily and have seen fantastic results. You can find the the other 5 in Part 1 of this blog post.

5. Flax seed oil – Flax seeds seem to be a buzzword these days. Crackers, cookies, cakes, cereals, and other starchy, fattening snacks are wearing flax seeds as a healthy disguise.  Despite these imposters, raw flax seeds and flax seed oil truly is a great source of ALA (alpha-linolenic acid), which is a biologic precurser to the other much buzzed about healthy fats – omega-3 fatty acids. Alpha-linolenic acid helps to curb heart disease, decrease inflammation, and arthritis.   And for the young and vain, it even helps your skin stay healthy and reduces inflammatory skin conditions.

4. Probiotic Acidophilus -  Another buzz word!  Probiotics are good bacteria that are naturally present in your digestive tract. They help make sure your immune system is in tip top shape, prevents growth of harmful bacteria, and keeps you regular.  What prevents them from growing is inadequate fiber, antibiotics, environmental toxins (Why that’s just a day in the life of an average American). So to right your wrongs, you should eat foods that contain probiotics – yogurt, kefir, fermented foods such as kim chi and sauerkraut. If you’re lactose intolerant like me, you can just drink a spoonful of this delicious probiotic liquid

3. Fish Oil - Similar to flax seed oils, fish oil is also an Omega-3 Fatty acid. Fish oil helps to reduce inflammation in the body, which helps to ward off aging-related illnesses. If you aren’t eating more than 3 ounces of fish every day, you can take a supplement.

2. Meso Silver - MesoSilver is a brand of colloidal silver, which is silver particles suspended in liquid.  People used to ingest colloidal silver to help prevent infections because it is a natural antibacterial. However, it turns your skin blue if you ingest too much, so DONT INGEST COLLOIDAL SILVER. What you can do, is use it as a natural antibacterial.  I spray it in my sneakers to prevent them from being stinky. You can also use it topically for bacterial skin infections, such as ringworm.

1. Nettle Leaf - Nettle leaf extract and teas have many benefits, but I have found that it is particularly effective against allergy symptoms. Studies have found that Nettle is a natural anti-histamine, helping to relieve watery eyes and snotty noses.   I live in Austin, TX which is the live music capital and the allergy capital of the United States. Claritin and Zyrtec offered relief, but also came with side effects of dry mouth or extreme tiredness.  Taking a daily Nettle leaf supplement has almost completely relieved me of my allergy symptoms. Whoo!
